about

The sparsely textured compositions of ‘The Nature of Things’ album are in the form of technological meditations - and which explore the relationships between musical tones - empty space - silence - and the philosophical idea of the void.

Composition 2022.02 (Untitled) is based on a five-note tone-cell of C1 - C2 - C#2 - C3 - C4.

Composition 2022.04 (Untitled) i is based on tone-cells from Morton Feldman’s composition ‘Trio for Flutes’ (1972).

Composition 2023.08 (Untitled) consists of twelve-tone rows generated by the Open AI GPT-4 artificial intelligence programme. .The sounds appear as single tones alternating with two-note chords (dyads).

The title - The Nature Of Things - comes an epic poem written by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius in the 1st century BC.

One of the foundational tenets of the poem is the idea that the universe is composed of invisible and indivisible particles called atoms. These atoms move through the void (empty space) and combine in various ways to form all the substances and objects we see around us. This concept has surprising parallels with modern atomic theory.

Lucretius argued against the idea of a creation ex nihilo (creation out of nothing). Instead - he believed that the universe has always existed and will continue to exist - undergoing endless cycles of creation and destruction.
