The title - The Nature Of Things - comes an epic poem written by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius in the 1st century BC.
One of the foundational tenets of the poem is the idea that the universe is composed of invisible and indivisible particles called atoms. These atoms move through the void (empty space) and combine in various ways to form all the substances and objects we see around us. This concept has surprising parallels with modern atomic theory.
Lucretius argued against the idea of a creation ex nihilo (creation out of nothing). Instead - he believed that the universe has always existed and will continue to exist - undergoing endless cycles of creation and destruction.
